With their artificial leather baffle cover and the perfectly crafted, solid walls with real wood planking made of American walnut, the Sonora look a bit like they‘ve fallen out of time. Perhaps they are, because they combine a technology that has been known for many years and mechanical tricks that have been known for a long time with the greatest effort and consistency. All this comes at a price, but it also produces an outstandingly beautiful result: the Sonora may not be a world champion in dynamics, but it has a tonal beauty and authenticity that has few rivals even in this class.

There is absolutely no doubt the Peak Consult Sonora is an extraordinarily accomplished and musical loudspeaker. Their ability to resolve timbral, spatial, pitch and timing data is beyond anything else I’ve experienced and the results are uncannily real. They put the listener in front of a musical event, no willing suspension of disbelief required, and they do it without apparent effort or artifice. That also requires them to deliver on the dynamic range, too, and here they are not found wanting either, though this is the area that is most obviously rewarded by careful setup.
Like many products at this capability and price level, the performance they are capable of requires and expects your attention to setting up, and the rewards when you do amply repay the effort involved. These may not be ‘entry level’ in any meaningful sense of the term, but they could easily be an end-game loudspeaker.

From the first few bars of the first few tracks I played on the Sonora, I knew I was going to like them. A broad smile spread across my face as they laid out in front of me an eminently musical tableau, where I could listen into what each musician was playing and how, and how that all dovetailed together to produce a coherent, enjoyable whole. This the Sonora did without fuss or flourish, undue distractions, colourations or quirks.
Many speakers just fire random bits of the music at you that, at first, may seem impressive, but which in fact contribute nothing to your appreciation of the whole. Not so the Sonora, they are dynamic, fast, detailed, with a very sharp sense of timing and rhythmic integrity and they allow you to listen into the music in ways most speakers simply don’t. They present the character of each instrument with a pleasing precision and take in their stride the most complex rhythmic twists and turns.
The Sonora simply unlocks the music for you to immerse yourself in. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them and can recommend them wholeheartedly.
