Buyers looking for great sound and exceptional build quality at an exceptional price are encouraged to seek out the MOON by Simaudio Nēo 280D MiND for a seriously fun audition. If you have to, pretend it costs a lot more.

The MOON by Simaudio Neo 280D with MiND player is a winner combination in my book. The pairing digs deep, exposing the bones of the music but at the same time keeping the flesh on the bones – keeping it real. I think the 280D is a rare specimen in that it should equally please the analytic and the music lover – a nice place to be.

If you’ve read the review so far you know the conclusion. If you’ve jumped straight here it’s simple, the Moon 280D sounds almost identical to the streamer & DAC in Cambridge Audio’s Edge NQ. And yet the Moon 280D DSD is even more impressive (in the positive sense of the word). It’s like Keanu Reeves: quietly spoken much of the time but capable of (sonic) mayhem when needed. If I had £3k to spend on a straightforward streaming DAC – no volume, no pre-amplifier – then the Moon 280D would be on the
shortlist.

A Ƃne example of an integrated streaming platform, DAC and control app, the 280D MiND 2 is a stronger proposition thanks to expanded compatibility with streaming services, all accessed through the well-designed, easy to use MiND Control software. It may be something of a plain Jane among a Ƃeld of rivals with large colour displays, touchscreens and the like, but it sounds excellent and is a delight to use.

However, I am quite certain that the 280D sounds more detailed and has a more silent background. So it’s a trade off. I may keep the MD-807T. I may let it go. However, I am very happy with the MOON 280D DSD and cannot imagine my system without it for all the things it does so well.

Simaudio’s Moon 280D DSD wasn’t designed with a kitchen-sink approach. If you’re looking for a network music player with a front panel display, volume control, onboard room correction, HDMI switching, phono preamp, headphone output, and maybe a Star Trek-like transporter that beams people and objects to far-off galaxies, I’d suggest you look elsewhere.
What the 280D does do is convert digital sources to analog and stream music from local sources and online music services with a high level of fidelity. Add to that its tank-like build quality, made in North America boasting rights, and lengthy ten year warranty, and it’s any easy recommendation for anyone who values quality over quantity.

I really enjoyed my time with the Simaudio Moon Neo 280D. I feel it’s a world-beater at its price, with sound quality that approaches, and in some respects exceeds, those of costlier DACs. Yes, it’s more expensive than the Oppo HA-1, and doesn’t offer a headphone amp or preamp functionality, but that shouldn’t concern you if all you need is an audio DAC. Plus, with the optional MiND module, which eliminates the need for a computer, the Neo 280D’s value increases.

The Neo 280D is an exceptional digital component visually and aurally, checking all the feature boxes as well. What ever flavor of digital connection, format, or resolution you desire, it is all included. In addition, the optional Moon MiND streaming module is too convenient and too good sounding to pass up. That, coupled with excellent styling and build, and the Moon by Simaudio Neo 280D Streaming DSD DAC deserves our highest current recommendation for sub $3,000 digital front ends.
